Industrial, Commercial and Institutional
Water Audit and Capacity Buyback Program 

The Regional Municipality of York's Water for Tomorrow program is pleased to announce that free, water-use audits to identify water-saving opportunities are available to York Region's industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) business owners, building owners and property managers.  

Approved applicants are eligible to receive a one-time financial incentive following the implementation of the capital retrofits identified in the audit, to permanently reduce water usage.

The program offers:

  • Free water audit and a comprehensive report of water saving opportunities
  • One-time incentive of $0.30 per litre of water saved per average day, or  50 per cent of the total capital cost of the retrofit up to a maximum of $50,000

Please note that applications for the ICI Audit and Capacity Buyback Program are acted upon on a first-come, first-served basis and are contingent on the availability of annual program funding. York Region reserves the right to accept or reject, at its sole discretion, any application or any part thereof.

 

Potential Water Saving Measures

Potential water saving measures for ICI buildings include, but are not limited to:

  • Replacement of older, less efficient equipment, with new modern equipment 
  • Reuse of once-through cooling water
  • Replacement of once-through cooling water system with closed-loop chilled water cooling system
  • Water recovery from water-cooled boiler pumps
  • Replacement of  water-cooled vacuum pumps with oil lubricated central vacuum pump system
  • Water recovery from water-cooled air compressors
  • Replacement of water-cooled air compressors with air-cooled air compressors equipped with variable speed drives
  • Reuse of condensing water from steam
  • High efficiency industrial clothes washers (not covered by ICI Commercial Clothes Washer Replacement Rebate)

Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in the ICI Audit and Capacity Buyback Program, potential participants must:

  • Have their business/property located in York Region
  • Have a water account administered by one of York Region's nine municipalities and be connected to a municipal water supply
  • Have classification by York Region as an industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) building (office, retail outlet, hotel, hospital, factory, warehouse, manufacturing, government, school, etc.)
  • Submit the completed application form as required for each part of the program

 

How to apply for this offer

Step 1 

Complete the application form.  Please identify if you are applying for the Water Use Audit or the ICI Capacity Buyback portion of the program.

Step 2

Review and initial the program terms and conditions.

Program Process

Once your application to the ICI Water Use Audit has been received:

 1.York Region will notify the applicant in writing of acceptance in the ICI Water Use Audit Program

 2.

York Region will schedule and conduct the audit to identify potential water savings through process changes or new technologies 

 3.

If necessary, York Region will verify pre-retrofit water consumption as identified in Part D of program terms and conditions

 4.

York Region will provide a comprehensive report outlining recommended modifications to the facility with estimated costs, estimates water savings, and estimated incentive*  

 

Once your application to the ICI Capacity Buyback Program has been received and approved:

 1.York Region will notify the applicant in writing of acceptance in the ICI Capacity Buyback Program
 2.The facility will complete the retrofit(s) as identified by the ICI Water Use Audit

 3.

York Region will confirm post-retrofit water savings as identified in Part D of Program Terms and   Conditions
 4.York Region will issue incentive based on confirmed water savings
