Q1: What is a pre-rinse spray valve?

A: A pre-rinse spray valve is a sink attachment generally used in commercial kitchens to clean dishes quickly without turning faucets on and off. A standard spray valve (three years old or more) generally uses 10 litres per minute (three gallons per minute) while a spray valve from this program will provide commercial users pre-rinse spray valves that use 4.13 litres per minute (1.24 gallons per minute). By installing a new pre-rinse spray valve you will be spending half as much money on pre-rinsing with the same pressure and performance as standard versions.

Q2: How do I know if I have a standard spray valve?

A: If your restaurant or food service facility is more than two years old, or your valve has not been replaced within the last four to five years, you likely have a standard spray valve in your business. Standard spray valves have a round spray pattern much like a showerhead. The new water-efficient spray valves have a two-dimensional 'knife edge' flow pattern. If you are unsure, please contact us to arrange for an assessment. If your food service facility qualifies, your low-flow pre-rinse spray valve will be installed at that time. If you have had your spray valve replaced in the last five years by Enbridge you already have an efficient model and do not qualify for this program.

Q3: How will it save me money?

A: By installing a new pre-rinse spray valve you will be spending half as much money on pre-rinsing with the same pressure and performance as standard versions.

Customers with kitchens that use water heated by natural gas can reduce their average annual gas and water use by about 2434 m3 and 432.8m3 respectively, saving up to $622 a year in water heating and about $866 a year in water usage costs.* Customers with kitchens that use water heated by electricity of another fuel other than natural gas can reduce their average annual electricity and water use by about 21,406kWh and 432.8 m3 respectively, saving up to $2,140 a year in water heating and about $866 a year in water usage costs.**

Q4: Will the new spray valve perform as well?

A: Yes. New pre-rinse spray valves will save you water and energy while maintaining equivalent cleaning performance.

top

Q5: What is involved in the installation visit?

A: The installation visit will involve a quick flow-rate test that will determine if your spray-valves are eligible for replacement. The replacement of each valve, if eligible, usually takes only a minute or two!

Q6: Will this cost me anything?

A: No, both the equipment and the installation costs are covered by York Region's Water for Tomorrow Program. This program will save you money on your water and energy bills and comes at no cost to you.

top

Q7: Do I need to be a restaurant?

A: No, but your business must have a commercial kitchen which is inspected by York Region Public Health. Examples of qualifying commercial kitchens are those found in hospitals and school cafeterias, hotels, and other establishments in York Region that are involved in the preparation and distribution of foodstuffs, and meet the other program eligibility requirements.

Q8: If I have more than one spray valve can I get them all replaced?

A: Yes. We will replace any and all older spray valves providing your business and each valve meets the eligibility requirements.

top

Q9: Are new food service restaurants or commercial kitchens currently under construction eligilble?

A: No. This program offers to replace older standard spray valves in existing commercial kitchens in York Region. Pre-rinse spray valves installed in new kitchens will already be low-flow valves.

top

Q10: Will you be coming to inspect the new valve?

A: Any kitchen participating in this program is eligible for an audit after installation. The participants are randomly chosen to gauge whether the valves are still in use and assess satisfaction with the program. This visit will be very brief.

Q11: What kind of pre-rinse spray valve will be installed?

A: Eligible customers will have a T & S Reliability Built In, Model Number: B-0107-C, installed. This valve was designed to create a high-velocity, fan-shaped, extremely efficient jet spray that will help cut through the toughest stuck-on food in almost the same time as a standard nozzle. It uses less water than a low-flow valve that produces a "round" spray.

Q12: Is there a warranty on the equipment?

A: Yes. The product is under warranty for one year and will be replaced free of charge should problems with the valve arise.

top

Q13: When will you come to my business?

A: Our representatives are available to visit your business between 8am and 8pm from, Monday to Saturday. We will work with you to determine a time and date that is most convenient for you and your business.
