Q1. Why is York Region introducing an ICI Clothes Washer Rebate Program?

Inefficient clothes washers can waste thousands of litres of water each year. By switching to an eligible water-efficient clothes washer model you will effectively reduce water-use in your business, minimize your environmental footprint and save money on your water bill. Q2. Who is eligible to participate in the ICI Clothes Washer Rebate Program?

To be eligible to participate in the program you must own or operate an existing Industrial, Commercial and Institutional facility in York Region and meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • All clothes washers purchased must be selected from the list of eligible makes and models for businesses and installed in York Region.
  • All clothes washers purchased must meet the ENERGY STAR® qualifications including:
    • Maximum water usage per tub capacity value (WF) of 0.8 L/cycle/L 
    • Minimum tub capacity to energy usage value (MEF) of 56.6 L/kWh/cycle 
  • All eligible clothes washers must have been purchased on or after January 1, 2011.

Q3. The clothes washer which I've purchased has an ENERGY STAR® label but it is not on the list of eligible models.  

On January 1, 2011 ENERGY STAR® qualifications were updated to meet increasing energy and water efficiency technology.  To ensure approval of your application please ensure the clothes washers are listed on our website prior to purchase. The qualifying list is updated frequently but if you have any questions about a specific model's eligibility please email us at info@waterfortomorrow.ca

Q4. How much is the rebate for the ICI Clothes Washer Rebate Program?

The program provides $100 rebates to ICI property owners who replace inefficient clothes washers with new, eligible water efficient models.

  • $100 rebate for clothes washers meeting ENERGY STAR® qualifications that are found on the York Region eligible model list.  For a complete list of eligible models click here.

Q5. Is there a limit on how many clothes washer rebates per ICI facility?

No, there is no limit to the number of rebates per ICI facility. The clothes washer(s) must be installed on the premise and inspections will be conducted to ensure the clothes washer(s) are installed on the premise.

Q6. Will York Region actually inspect installed clothes washer?

Yes, York Region will inspect facilities where 10 or more clothes washers have been installed, prior to issuing a rebate.  York Region will also randomly inspect approximately 10 per cent of all clothes washers installed for which a rebate was issued. If you are randomly selected for an inspection, we will call to set up an appointment.

Q7. Why does York Region inspect clothes washers?

We perform inspections to confirm that rebates were given for eligible clothes washers that were installed and, thus, saving water in York Region. This will help verify the water saved and success of the program. Inspections will also help us to evaluate customer satisfaction, which will improve the program.

Q8. May I receive a rebate if I purchase my clothes washer through a contractor?

Yes, you can still receive a rebate if you purchase an eligible clothes washer through a contractor. Ask your contractor to ensure the make and model of the clothes washer purchased and installed is clearly stated on the receipt along with the company or contractor's name and contact information. If the make and model is not clearly stated on the receipt, there will be a delay in processing your application and your application may not meet the terms and conditions of the program.

Please note: Contractors may not apply for rebates on their clients' behalf.

Q9. How long until I receive my rebate cheque?

The rebate cheque will take approximately eight to 10 weeks upon receipt of completed application. You can check the status of your rebate online or via telephone. Please allow four weeks for mail-in rebate forms to be received before checking the status.

Q10. May I use standard laundry detergent in my high-efficiency clothes washer?

Please refer to the clothes washer user manual or manufacturer's website for recommended laundry detergent.

Q11. How do I dispose of my used clothes washer(s)?

Applicants are responsible for arranging the proper method of disposal for the used clothes washer(s).

Q12. Is there a residential clothes washer rebate program?

No. At this time York Region offers rebates to single-family home owners on water-efficient toilets and humidifiers. To learn more about these programs click here.
