Whole Home
Leaks
The Water Efficiency Master Plan estimates that in York Region on average, 15 litres of water per person per day is lost due to leakage in the majority of homes built prior to 1996. Regardless of your home's age inspect, inspect for leakage on a regular basis and repair any you find. Not only will this save water, it could save your home from expensive repairs due to water damage.
- A leaking faucet is a simple inexpensive repair and it could save 75 litres of water per day.
- Leaking toilets have been estimated to waste up to 40,000 litres of water per year.
- Not all leaking toilets make noise. Toilet tank leaks can occur because;
- The flush valve or valve seat is worn, letting water escape from the tank.
- The inlet valve is worn or doesn't close completely.
- The float mechanism needs repair or replacement.
- Check regularly as to whether your toilet is leaking by using leak detection tablets. Simply place a dye tablet in tank and wait for 15 minutes. If coloured water appears in the bowl, the toilet is leaking.
- These tablets are available free of charge through Water for Tomorrow at any of our public events. Click here for information on where to find Water for Tomorrow in your community.
- Fix any leaking toilets with manufacturer approved replacement parts. Using ill fitting or wrong model parts could increase your toilets flow rate.
